There are several unique advantages to purchasing authentic hardwood furniture as opposed to cheap, mass-produced models. It’s stronger, more durable, and let’s face it, authentic hardwood furniture looks more attractive as well. Whether you are looking for a new dining table, coffee table or any other piece of furniture, you simply can’t go wrong with hardwood. To ensure it maintains its naturally elegant appeal, though, you’ll need to protect it against scratches. Although minor scratches probably won’t cause any serious need for concern, it will affects it’s overall look. The good news is that there are certain things owners can do to reduce the chance of scratching; here’s how:

Use Coasters

I can’t stress enough just how important it is to use coasters on your furniture. It’s all too common for individuals to lay their drinks down on a piece of authentic hardwood furniture without using a coaster. If someone accidentally hits the furniture with their drink too hard, it could leave a scratch. In addition, condensation from the glass could warp and even rot the authentic hardwood. The bottom line is that you need to always use a coaster when placing a drink down on your furniture. It’s a simple and effective way to keep your furniture protected from basic damage and scratches.

Watch Where You Use It

Sometimes scratches will occur because the furniture is placed in high-traffic areas where people commonly walk by. For instance, a table set up around the front door will likely get bumped into by people entering the home. You don’t have to necessary move the table to another room, but you should give it some space away from the front door. Ideally, you want people to easily see the table or piece of furniture upon entering the home. This will reduce the chance of someone accidentally bumping into or knocking over the table.

Move With Care

It should come as no surprise that most damage to authentic hardwood furniture comes from either moving it into the house, or from moving it around inside the house. A minor ding into the wall could result in a devastating scratch that affects the appearance of your furniture. Always use caution when moving your furniture and don’t attempt a move by yourself if the piece is too heavy. A second set of hands will take some of the weight off your shoulders; therefore, reducing the chance of scratching or dinging up your furniture.
